Natalie Portman Drinking Tea

Dear customer, I enjoyed drawing a celebrity doing something everyday in itself...plus doing it in a brief amount of time helped me refine my style a bit. I hope you use Sketch-It in the future.

So I give you Natalie Portman drinking tea, done in 3 minutes, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Sincerely,

Cat acts as Lion

This is my cat acting like a lion. A pretty nice picture I think. Looking forward to seeing your interpretation.

I got this from sketch-it captain Scott Moore, in the mail today:
"This guy sent in his request on monday. I copied the request over to my email folder for you but I must have forgotten to send you a notice. Here it is."

I think it's not a guy. It's a gal. Just me guessing. Here it is -- the cat as hunter. I made this sketch on my computer to save some time.
-Kelly Newcomer

Diamonds are a Robot's Best Friend

"Diamond patterns (like from a rug or a sweater) with a smiling child and a kitten and a robot."

Here's another barter request from Kelly. The last time I drew this many robots I had yet to kiss my first girl. I used to be crazy about robots. I still have a book I bought with my caddy money called "Android Design". Somewhere in my archives I have a walk-cycle sketch of mechanical legs.

I loved to draw and I was really good in science. Add on top of that my tendency to take apart all things electronic and I was certain I was going to be an engineer when I grew up. I read "Megatrends" back in highschool and decided to design prosthetic hip-replacements for aging baby boomers. I was going to rake in the cash.

Instead I majored in art to the horror of my family. I make a decent living and I get to draw imaginative things like robots, smiling children and kittens.

Bedford Fellows [pdf]

Marilyn is a great, repeat customer here at sketch-it. She edits the Greenwich Village Block Association's newsletter. Being a non-profit organization they must rely on clip art (shudder) or file photos for their news stories. She requested an image of Catherine Zeta-Jones as a chef. Gothamitekight readily obliged.

That's the magic of sketch-it. If you have a non-profit newspaper or newsletter, if you are a band who has music on Magnatune, if you're writing an article for the Wikipedia and you don't have the right image, we're the ones you need to call.

Fan Art

I'm a big fan of Kelly Newcomer's art. When she asked for bartered sketches in lieu of payment for some of the sketches she's done here on sketch-it, I jumped at the chance. I never would have drawn this image if it weren't a request from Kelly.

That's part of the beauty of sketch-it. There's all kinds of things that artists are creating that are beyond their normal comfort zone. I think that's a good thing. It's like saying, "Let's see where the day takes me."

Have you ever hopped on your bicycle, with nothing extra other than a quarter? Try it. When you get to an intersection, flip the quarter. Heads, go right. Tails, go left. See where you end up.

"Hi! I'd like a sketch done of me and my girlfriend."

Happy to oblige Tyler!

Apologies to Mac/Safari Folk

[Update:: I seem to have fixed the problem. Blockquote + Monospace font + Safari = Yucky web page. It also messed up in IE as well. All better now.]

My apologies to the Mac crowd for the broken site. I recently viewed sketch-it on my laptop and saw the realy long sting of text and the images waaaaay over on the side. I'm not sure what happened.

Sketch-it looks fine on a Mac using Firefox. We are hunting down the source of the problem and once we find it we will take it out behind the shed and give it such a lickin' it will never show it's scrawney hide in these parts again.

*shuffles onstage*

Hi everybody,

My name is Michelle and I'm now the newest member of Sketch-It. I'm an animation student (classmates with Josh/Artistic Enigma, wouldncha know) and all-around drawing...type...person. I'd love to get into mainstream comics someday. Found through drawingboard.org as well. I can make the pencil draw realistically or cartoony, or even in anime style. You can find my smatterings of artwork at my site, www.michellebridges.com and also my deviantart.

Thanks and hope to be of service in future!

Cameron's Third Lap

Third lap around the sun that is. Cameron turns three tomorrow and he loves monster trucks so I've drawn him this sketch. I won't get to see him until Friday but I think it will still be a surprise by then. He doesn't get online that much.

Dubai Dubai Dubai...We're halfway there

Walkin' to Dubailol well this would be my first submission for Sketch-it.

Dear sir,
Thank you again for choosing Sketch-it for your sketch requests. I definitely enjoyed doing this piece mainly because I got to do a LOT of research into the subject. I actually had no idea that this was going on in Dubai.
We hope that you will use Sketch-It in the future.
i have linked to the image on my deviantart page, where you can find the larger sized image [link] also my photobucket link, a smaller sized version as well as attached the image to make sure you have received the file. [link]

Papillons

"She is called Papillons because she is as lovely as a butterfly."

Drawing smoke in a line art drawing is difficult. Determining what to define with a line is always the trick. What to leave out is just as important as the marks that do get laid down. For the tattoo, I used a pointilism technique and like the result.

The smoke on the other hand...I'm not so sure.

Jon 2 John

This from another recently satisfied customer:
Scott,

I recently purchased a sketch from you ('Somthing Funny?') and i was
really impressed. Loading your website this morning and seeing that picture really put a smile on my face. Feel free to pass my praise along to whichever artist did this particular sketch - they did a great job capturing the spirit of that night!

Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for running such a great website. Most people would never consider charging only a dollar for such a unique service - it says a lot about you that you are willing to do this!

Thanks again Scott!

Sincerely,
Jon

And Thank YOU Jon. The artist who completed your sketch is the Award Winning John Mattie, a.k.a. Dudle R. Don't expect to learn any more about him from his profile because the lazy bum hasn't put anything up there. I could spin yarns about him but it will depress you all once you discover that every word of it is true.

Twin Baby Girls

"I'd like a sketch of my twin daughters"

Well, they might not look exactly like the identical twins they are! But we all know they each have their own personality from the minute they were born. (My stepbrothers are identical twins and while they still look alike, they are really different too - and it shows - one is more "wild and crazy"). I love their little ruffled outfits. -Kelly Newcomer

Swap

At times like these when business is slow, I check out the stats logs for sketch-it and see who has been popping in to say hello. I also spend some time seeing what else is out there on related sites.

The sketch to the right is from Sketch Swap. The concept is simple and fun. Kind of like sketch-it. Using my mouse and their online sketch app I sketched something. I clicked the "submit drawing" button but got nothing in return.

I tried again. I drew a simple smiley face and got a not so nice sketch in return.

So how about it? Any sketch-it fans out there wanna swap a sketch? The first one to send me a sketch will get a bonafide sketch-it sketch free of charge. It's an incredible offer that won't last long so act now.

It's not every day that you get to save a whole dollar.

Family Line

"Can you please sketch this mountain scene? It's the view from the stoop of my anscestral home, 65 years ago."

BirchAncestralHome

A sign of modesty perhaps from 1941. There's a man and two dogs in the picture Birch submitted for this sketch request. "Yes you can take my picture," he may be saying, "but don't miss the grandeur surrounding me."

I don't know where his ancestral home is but aside from the dirt road, it looks untouched by man. There's so much landscape in the picture because, perhaps there was just so much landscape.

Don't Eat It!

This is the first post by the contributor, Little bun. He doesn't have an account for this blog so I'm posting it for him. I wasn't sure of the title he came up with for this sketch so the one above is an interpretation of his actual title.

My son drew his very first picture today. This is a big deal since he turns two in less than three days. All previous attempts at drawing resulted in a rainbow of drool streaming out of his mouth. He's past the oral stage but for some reason every time I sit him down to draw, he sticks the crayons in his mouth.

I thought I was smart by getting the special twistable crayons. They are nice and big so tiny hands have an easy time holding them. Each crayon is encased in a plastic holder making things less messy.

We were playing in the kitchen when bun looked up his previous, highly assisted, attempts hanging on the fridge. He looked at me and said "Crayon. Draw." I sat him down in his high-chair, taped some paper to his tray and gave him the "mess free" crayons.

Any time before, I did most of the work. Call them collaborative pieces. I danced, sang songs, whatever it took to engage him in sketching and distracted from the aroma of pigmented wax crayons.

This time all I had to do was repeat my mantra, "This is a crayon. You draw with it. Don't eat it." If he ventured away from the paper and opened his mouth, I'd whisk the crayons away. Near the end, after almost filling the page, I thought we'd passed a milestone. I turned around to get a drink of water. When I glanced back I saw a gaping maw, dripping with a bright orange paste.

Baby steps.

[Geek-out] Allow me to put on my Art-Geek hat right now. If you study the arcs in the above illustration you can tell that the artist is left handed. After a close examination of the strokes one can determine the order of color selection. Yellow first, then green then red. Most of the movements that layed down the color were deliberate and rythmic rather than contemplative. [/Geek-out]

One idea we've been toying with at sketch-it has been to enlist the skills of a child contributor. We are actively recruiting qualified candidates. Little bun may continue to make guest appearances but he won't be taking requests any time soon.

Aimee 2.0

"Ok. So I'm going to try for a series..."

Thank you for the inspiration Aimee. This is a sketch-it first. A series of the same image by two different artists. Care to begin a sketch-it project of your own making? Send us a request. You will be amazed by what we create.

The verticle bars at the top of Aimee's husband's head is the spiral binding of my sketch book. Sometimes I get so into my sketch, I lose all sense of space and time. I forget to eat. I sketch right off the page. Either that or it's just poor placement of the image on the page. You decide.

Things have slowed down a bit. Funny thing is, the more sketches we would post, the more requests we got. Once we caught up to the demand and could handle more requests, fewer people wanted sketches. Well, that and the fact that Blogger was having fits and starts this time last week.

It has been a good thing. We are re-tooling right now and it gives us a bit of breathing room. I've also had more time for my full-time gig, taking care of my son. There's been more time for my part-time project, producing a documentary about the struggles of urban revitalization titled, "Building at a Crossroads".

It's all good.

Pimp My Blog

"I'd like to have a cool sketch of myself for my blog."

MollieBlog

Cool 'nuff for you?

I thought about doing just her eye, like the header graphic on her blog. Her eyes are deep, clear and demand attention. After seeing the three photos she provided for us, I decided to expand the scope of my sketch.

Mollie provided us with special (we like to think just for us) pictures to sketch and posted them to our own little web page on her blog:
http://www.mollieoakleaf.com/sketch-it.htm

We take Mollie's effort seriously and have rewarded her for it.

Now I realize that I was not wrong in sketching Parker's eyes so large. He obviously gets them from his mommy.

Parker and Pixel

"i'd like for you to sketch a picture of my son and his kitten. you can find an image to reference at: http://www.parkeroakleaf.com/pixelpage.htm"

What do you think? A little too much Precious Moments? Parker's eyes are so big and cute, I couldn't resist. He really is, "the world's greatest boy." Both he and Little bun will have to share that title.

Kevin has the right idea. Notice the image URL in his message. If you would like us to sketch a photo, either email it to us (you'll see the email address once you pay for the sketch) or just include a link to the photo right in your message to sketch-it.

In the future, we will provide a handy little "upload" or "link" option for photos. If you forget to send us a reference, we'll usually pester you until you do. Another option is to allow us to post a sketch of our choosing.

You say you want a sketch of your "friend"? Well, without a photo we could create a sketch of who we think your "friend" is. That sounds like fun.

It Feels So Good

It feels great to be back home. Really it does. My own comfy chair. My own computer. My own scanner.

[side note: Being on vacation with one's child does not mean one actually gets a vacation.]

Kelly's right when she suggests I was suffering from on line withdrawal. One solution she had was to have internet in her head. That way she could go on about her normal life without the interruption of checking her computer every minute or every hour.

It does have its appeal but I'm not ready just yet. Have you seen the photos of the guy who embedded a security chip into his own hand? It begs the question, "Why not just build it into a ring one could wear?"

The problem with human embedded technology is the planned obsolecense of our technology. After a few months, that chip in my head would be outdated. Kind of a pain to swap it out for a new one.

Agreed that the day has not come for time saving web implants. Until then, I will make due with cobbled together solutions and we will continue to deliver sketch-it greatness.

The...ahem...Filmmaker

Our patient friend Laura asked for a sketch of a "filmmaker".

The only filmmakers I know are those annoying, semi-balding, tourist types, with the swoop haircuts, that for some unknown reason, think I make great subject matter for their vacation video.

Of course they don't bother asking me if I want to be filmed....I suppose they think grinning at me from behind the camera will cause me to adjust to the sudden invasion of my privacy.

I like to make faces at them in rapid succession before they can react....

My guess is when it's all said and done and they're back home watching their vacation documentary, it's the best part of the whole dang thing anyway... :-)

You Are the Elephant

"An elephant you might see when you are drunk."

Well, since this request was rather open, I decided to make a surreal elephant out of a person. Complete with trunks for fingers and a kilt made of elephant ears. You see, when you are drunk, the elephant you see could very well be yourself.

Happy (Belated) Birthday Laura

"It was her 29th birthday on the 14th, so Iwould love it if you could commemorate that somehow... "

LauraB-Day

It's been a long time coming but I finally got this sketch on line. It's amazing to me how out of my element I become once I'm out of my normal surroundings. This image eventually was captured with a digital camera and not a scanner like I'm used to using. I edited it using the default, crappy Mirco$oft image editing utility. My father-in-law's computer for some reason doesn't like the pop-up window in Blogger to upload images so I loaded this up to my Flickr account.

Regardless of all the obstacles, it's out there for the world to see. I'm all about solutions. Not problems. Expect nothing less from sketch-it.

A Good Problem to Have

You may have noticed over the past few days that you couldn't get to sketch-it. Due to technical difficulties beyond our control...I could go on about the reasons but the important thing to know is, we are working on a better, more reliable solution.

Sketch-it began as a "what if?" and has rapidly grown into something much more.

Thank you.

The popularity of buying original art, with a relatively speedy turnaround, for someone you love has caught on and spread. We are recruiting more qualified artists to meet demand. We are determining the best software/hardware solution to take us to the next level of sketch request fulfillment.

It's been a blast so far. Stick around. You won't be disappointed.

Memories Are Made of This

Ahhhh... this request brought back many memories.

Adam Pasick asked for a sketch of this vintage Panasonic 8 Track Tape Player from the 70's. To change the channels on the tape, you pushed the plunger on the top! Ka-Boom!

Hope you like it Adam!

Major Bubbles

"My crazy brother "Petter" is currently stationed in Iraq. From time to time, we get crazy photos sent home. This was the latest! Sketch him, will ya?"

What you can't see is the plush character on top of that head gear he's wearing. Not really sure what it is. I really like the bubbles. The title is a play on words. I first thought of titling it "Private Bubbles" but I figured "Petter" has a higher rank than Private. I don't know what his rank is. I do know that his sister loves him.

Meeting The Higher Calling

Adore

request said "gorgeous!," pic was labeled "WOW!!"... it's my girlfriend who i adore...

Scott's Girlfriend

That's truly sweet. We here at sketch-it wholly endorse the act of adoration whereby one lover requests a sketch of the other. It's better than a bouquet or a card and so much more original.

G'night folks. It's been a busy day. Along with the snow blizzard in Minneapolis, sketch-it experienced its own flurry of activity. Over 1,300 page loads and nearly 700 unique visitors came to the site today. That's ten times better than last week and a hundred times better than a month ago.

We are bringing on a few more, highly qualified artists to meet demand. You will not be disappointed. These folks are real pros, each with their own unique style.

Thanks again for your interest and patronage.

Mark Morris Dance Group for Janie

"To dear Janie: Hope you're feeling better"

dancers

I love dance. It's a wonderful feeling to put my body in motion. I'm a visual artist and am in awe of those that can make their bodies perform physical and visual magic.

Beagle Chasing Rabbit

"Beagle chasing a rabbit. If possible, something other than a profile view."

Beagle Chasing Rabbit
This is Don's second request. He does come up with the challenging images. Don is a talented illustrator himself. Check out his site here. You could also wait a day or two and see his handiwork right here on sketch-it. I have invited him to be a contributor. Let's hope he says yes.

He said "help me!"

Scott called me and said "Help!!!" Since he's received so many requests today, I'm going to be his sketch-it pinch hitter. I'm also going to round up some other sketch-it artists who are willing to draw strange requests for change and the sheer thrill of it. Here is a sketch of my dad's cute little troll - a norwegian wood carving.

Much Appreciated

Thank you all so much for your patronage. Since the post on Gothamist this morning we have received many, many requests.

Your patience is appreciated. We will get to everyone's sketch request in the order they were received and post it here on sketch-it.

There are some crazy, funny and touching sketch requests in the queue. Stick around. Things are really getting interesting.

Sending Photos

Hello Sketch-it Fans!

Some people have sent in requests and ponied up the buck to get their sketch but are wondering how they are supposed to send us photos. You can try one of these three methods.
  1. Include a URL for the photo in the message section of your PayPal payment. OR
  2. Send a separate email to p h o t o [ ] s k e t c h - i t * o r g. OR
  3. Post a comment with a URL to the photo
Flickr works great for this sort of thing.

Of course if you simply want to describe a sketch, then you don't need an image. I'm guessing that most will want a sketch-ified version of a picture of their friend, lover, roommate or pet iguana.

Nut Job

"Just for fun."

Celebrity

"Angelina Jolie Sitting in a club chair."

"When do you think I'll receive the sketch? Are you all booked up?"

Well, Don, there was a bit of a bottleneck for a while but it appears to have cleared up. How's a six hour turnaround for you?

Just in case you were wondering, this is about as risqué as we'll get here on sketch-it. So if you had plans for an entire Angelina series, keep it rated PG please.

Classy and Fabulous

"It's my roommate's boyfriend... have fun with it.. we mess with him all the time and even made him a website and sent it to all his friends without him knowing..."

Chad Hangin'

Yank!

"My kids, pulling my hair laughing & looking at the viewer while I laugh."

Cute little monsters aren't they?

Thompsonist

"sketch our gothamist mascot."

Say hello to Thompson, the Gothamist mascot. I think he's a persian cat. Don't know much about him except he doesn't like to fly coach. Perhaps Jake can fill us in on his back story. For photos of Thompson, go here.

Dark Matter

"'Daring Space Heroes' - if possible, something that might still look okay when sized down."

As Count Floyd used to say, "Oooooh Scary!"

Family Time

Here's a sketch of my son. He's going to be two years old in a couple of weeks. He's one family member who I will create art for free.

Manga Happy Days

"tom bosley + ninja, in a somewhat abstract style."

Abstract art is barely distinguishable. The difficult task here was to create an abstract sketch that was still identifiable as Mr. C.

This works. Mr. Bosley in a ninja outfit. Not a far cry from Father Dowling.

Goin' to the Chapel

"Here's $2, because there are two people in the picture I'd like you to sketch. We're getting married in 2 weeks, and may want to use this somehow in the wedding."

Colin pointed me to two photos [1,2] and gave me my choice. I chose neither or both. I picked Colin from the first photo and his wife to be from the second. I can do this because I have a license. Artistic license.

Don't mess with me. I've got a sabel paint brush and I'm not afraid to use it.

Whitewater

"A whitewater kayaker (in a kayak)"

Yes, thank you for the clarification to place the kayaker IN the kayak. I thought about sketching a kayaker in a kayak in a parking lot just to mess around with Seth a bit. Then I thought, "He is paying me for this sketch. Best not cheese him off." So I drew this instead.

Hope you like it Seth.

Amit Sent Me

"a picture of me"

A picture of me? Well, unlike the other requests, this one did not have a link to Flickr or any idea of who me was. The email listed in the PayPal receipt could have been the person's name or not. The PayPal contact was listed as Do You Zoom Inc.

That's what I decided to search for. I knew that Amit had sent him because that was left in the message section of the PayPal receipt. It was an adventure. Not a long one but a challenge all the same.

Once I discovered who "me" was, it all made sense. Seth Godin is an author of books about marketing and standing out amidst the crowd. Was the lack of a picture Mr. Godin's purposeful method to get me to remember him?

Perhaps.

Good on you Godin.

Sam in Hat

"A picture of my friend Sam. Use whatever style you think fits it best!"

My first thought was to go Ralph Steadman to get the Hunter S. Thompson feel. Then I spent a little more time with the photograph. I began to like the way it was framed. Sam is almost emerging out of the corner.

Passed through the sketch-it filter, Sam is now a series of whispy black brush strokes that assemble themselves into his likeness. Kind of like that Madonna video where a flock of black birds clusters together and becomes Madonna.

Yip! Yip! Yip!

"My girlfriend's annoying chihuahua, doing a 'Top Hat' dance routine in a Top Hat, cape, and monocle with a cane?"

Stephen is my new, favorite customer. He knows how to have fun. He's knows that putting on a wig doesn't threaten his masculinity. I think it's comic/tragic that his girlfriend has a pet chihuahua.

What does one do when their partner has a ridiculous looking animal for a pet? Why make it look even more ridiculous.

If I had this one to do all over again, I might make those eyes extra buggy. I decided on realistic for the sketch style because the outfit is just plain silly. Silly sketch style and silly outfit may have created a double-negative vibe and not been funny at all.

Six Degrees of Snively Whiplash

Back in 1999 I worked for a company called B3. Broadband Broadcast was the full name. The founders said B3 came from Broad, Band and Broadcast. To which I say the abbreviated version should have been B3C but nobody asked me. They never do.

Anyway, while working at B3, I met this plucky young artist named Manny. He was on my design team to help brand this dot com company. The company burned through their million and a half dollars of start up money and laid off all of the artists hired right after me. Manny and I remain friends to this day.

Sadly Manny moved away to SpokeCan Washington to work for this little video game company. Maybe you've heard of them. They created this thing called Myst. A few months ago, that company closed shop and Manny was out of a job again.

A little side gig he had started up with Eric, a guy he went to school with back here in Minneapolis, became one of his only outlets to create art. This little hobby of his and Eric's is called PandaXpress!. There's a link to the site in the links section.

An evil taxi driving goat named Pollo has kidnapped a brilliant scientist leaving the adorable Dahlia all alone. She sets out to find her father riding atop her protector, Panda, a cybernetic yet cuddley panda bear. Along the way she encounters Wetherby, a stereotypical 19th century secret agent and regular proper fellow. She also meets Wikkity Jones, a 70's throwback, quad-roller skatin' ninja assassin.

I suggest starting from the beginning of the webcomic and reading all the way to present.

One of the newest members at PX! is Picksy. She posted a comment in the PandaChat box. There's a URL attached to her username so I clicked it. Off I went to her page over at DeviantArt.com. It is there that I find a picture of a man with the longest handlebar mustache I have ever seen.

I'm thinking Snively Whiplash except when I draw it it comes out William H Macy.

When you ponder all that is "the Web," consider the above sketch. You never would have seen it if I hadn't met Manny seven years ago.

I Wanna Go Higher

"Perhaps you can jazz up this pic."
Mad scientist
Do you prefer Thelonious Monk or Sarah Vaughn?

The picture that Zach submitted with his request shows a man, perhaps Zach, concentrating deeply on his construction. I began to imagine this person as a mad scientist. Then I started to think of his evil layer and a large apparatus with which to construct his doomsday machine. Add a dash of Theodore Geisel and a pinck of Shel Silverstein, stir and pour it out on a piece of paper and here's what you get.

Hopper House

"How about a funky sketch of our new house"

Not very funky. I am guessing Keith was looking for something from a Tim Burton movie. How about something from a Johnny Depp movie instead? Like "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" or "Don Juan DeMarco"?

It's such an adorable little home. I couldn't funkify it too much.

Headwaters Stationery

Headwaters Bamboo Co."This might become addicting... Okay, now can you do my header graphic (www.split-bamboo.com)?"

How's this?

I would have posted it sooner but my son has not been feeling well. Not an excuse mind you. Just letting you know why the request to post time has increased slightly.

Me and my twin sister

I thought about drawing only one sister and then copying it over so there were two people. Then I thought against it. This is the upper limit of what I will do. Don't send me a group photo of twenty people and ask me to do a sketch of everyone in the picture.

I must have been thinking of Beverly Hills 90210 when I drew the sister on the right.

Keep the requests coming.

Allrightythen

Let's get down to business. I've got at least five hours of sleep banked up and there's still ink in my sharpie.

More sketches commin' atcha!

Isuru for Amit

"My roommate, Isuru Seneviratne (Born and bred in Sri Lanka, loves Noir.) in a realistic style."

That's a wrap folks. Good night. I'll pick up the requests tomorrow afternoon. There's five in the queue right now. They will be sketched and posted in the order they were received.

I'm having a blast sketching for you.

Licensing Issues

(CC)
From the beginning sketch-it was conceived as a fun service to share with friends on the web. That's why we chose the Creative Commons license we have listed on this site. If you want a unique sketch to give to your sister on her birthday or a sketch of a dream you had last night, that's why we're here.

Custom Work
Are you a business owner looking to create a new logo or leterhead? Do you want to own the signed original drawing and hang it on your wall? Perhaps you'd like us to guarantee that we'll spend more than sixty seconds on your work of art. Then you want to choose our "Custom Work" option.

Browse the site and find a style you like. You may contact one of our talented artists and settle on a contract arrangement with them where you will own the finished artwork. If you choose you can own all the rights to the image. That way you can do whatever you want with it.

We Love You...
  • If you are a band just starting out and you've got your songs posted on Magnatune.
  • If you're publishing an academic paper and need some images to go with your well researched data
  • If you are a non-profit company and are looking to freely distribute the sketch on a bumper sticker or in a publication. (for fundraising and items for sale, please refer to the custom work section below)
  • If you're a great storyteller but a lowsy artist

Hourly Rate
A typical hourly rate for an illustrator is $60. By spending one minute on the sketches here at sketch-it, we are sticking to that rate. Completing a sketch in 60 seconds helps all the artists to become a faster, more efficient and better artist.

Derivative Work
Sketches requested and posted here on sketch-it are for non-commercial use. If you post the image somewhere else, give credit to the artist and to sketch-it for the work. You can use the sketch in any derivative work you like as long as that work is under the same license as we use here.

Nails of Steele

"My roommate, Annie Steele. (Has great taste in music!) in a realistic style, please."

After my last sketch, I decided to mix it up. Perhaps all the sharpie chi was used up for the day. Therefore I switched to brush and ink.

Voila!

Great White North

"My roommate, Aileen Nowlan. (Red hair, Candian, likes bikes) in a realistic style, please."

The eyes are the window to the soul. I spent a long time on the eyes and I completely got them wrong. She's not looking right at you like in the picture. I am pleased with the chin and cheek bones. Curly hair, I love. Drawing curly hair, not so much.

Amit gives a nice little synopsis of Aileen's interests. Perhaps we at sketch-it could begin offering a match-making service. Hey, if Rocketboom can do it, so can we. That is assuming I create a decent representation. Maybe in some cases it would be better to show someone a sketch of yourself rather than a photo.

What I love about doing this, aside from drawing, is the collaboration with complete strangers. It's like a game. For a brief period of time, either one minute or perhaps five, I dial myself into the requestor's mind. If they want me to draw a person, then I have to spend some time decifering the subject as well. "What is this person like?"

I look at Aileen's pursed lips in a quasi-smile and imagine what type of jokes does she tell?

It's all part of the craft. The Unknown Society of Creative Blog Services will not be happy to learn I am giving away so many secrets.

Shoo Fly

"A fly rod and reel, a fishing creel, and a couple flies lying around"

Amit is correct. "Sometimes the Internet is really cool." I've never drawn any of these items before. I had no idea what a creel was. After a search on Flickr I was an expert. An expert at least on what it looked like.

I suppose the easy thing to do would be to visit the Headwaters Bamboo Rod Co's web site and view the header graphic. Not this cowboy. I like to have freedom to interpret in my own way and in my own time.

So I say to the folks at Headwaters, "Is this not exactly what you were looking for?"

Martha Mash-up

"So here's a silly pic. I thought maybe you could have some fun with it."

Loads of fun. More please.

Creative Generalist

"I'll be writing a brief piece at www.hopperanalytical.com/reverseinnovation on the creative generalist. For it, I'd love a sketch of a swiss-army style pencil - you know, one with various tools hanging out of it like a satellite dish, keyboard, spaghetti strainer, etc. (doesn't matter what the tools are) -- I'd like the image to help represent the creative generalist spirit of many bloggers."

Phew!

You mean something like this?

Paul for Paul

"Can you sketch this picture of me? Youdda man!"

Paul Wilson

I'm not sure who Youdda Man is or what it is. Perhaps a new Star Wars character. I reformatted the image so it now has a portrait orientation instead of landscape like the original image on Flickr. Not sure if Paul has a web site but I pulled the link used in the headline for this post from his email.

Amit Gupta 3 of 3

"Could you draw one of kara?"

Yes I can.

Amit Gupta 2 of 3

"I would love a sketch of my friend Luke" - Request granted.

Amit Gupta 1 of 3

Say hello to Amit. Print it out. Color it. Use it as your next avatar. It's up to you. It's the hot new thang - a sketch-it sketch. Tell your friends.

Kaw! Cuss!

Tonight I went to my DFL precinct caucus. Pictured right is Melanie, our caucus director person. I don't know what her official title was. I showed up twenty minutes late and missed the formal introductions.

It was very interesting to behold. There were lots of resolutions. People could speak in support of or in opposition against the resolution on the floor. All of the resolutions that passed get sent along to the DFL Senate District Convention and then on to the State Convention if they survive.

This is all about getting one's issues addressed. Say you want a law changed or a new area of focus, this is a good place to start. It takes a long time and there are people out there that don't want your agenda to progress. There are also some people that will support you and your ideas.

Now it's not required that you participate in representative democracy at this level. It's not even mandatory to vote. It may be boring to many of you. Still, it's the best way to go about making a positive impact on the world we live in.

Technology Evangelist

Me:: "Do you want a realistic rendering or a caricature? Line drawing or ink wash? Pencil or pen? Or you could leave it up to me. "

Ed:: "Hmmm, no real preference. Wait, my wife says 'realistic & pencil.'"

Pencil is not my prefered medium but I started out with pencil like so many other artists. That would be a trip to pull out an archive image from when I was ten years old.

So here's the sketch for Ed and his wife. His head is a bit mushed but over all I think it's a decent likeness. Total time spent was around 5 minutes. I was feeling generous with my time.

Another request generated from the blurb that ran in the local paper. And some say that nobody reads the newspaper any more. I know of at least two people that do. Or did. Last Thursday at least.

A little re-cap of all the variations of sketches you can receive at sketch-it for those of you just joining us:
  1. sketch = request a skecth, give me a buck, I post the sketch soon thereafter
  2. micro-sketch = same as number 1 but I make it really small
  3. writ-large = again, same as number 1 but I make it really big
  4. micro-minute = request a frame or frame sequence to participate in a historic, interactive piece of performance art as animated short.
  5. performance = Not only do I give you the sketch you requested, I also give you instructions to create a fuller art experience with your new purchase.
  6. food art = same as number 1 but I sketch it on a piece of food, perhaps with food or with a knife.

Shredding Tears of Joy

Here's a birthday gift for my friend Annabelle. She recently started up a Lady Snowboarding Club. This while never having snowboarded before in her life. Since then she has hit the slopes once or twice. I suppose the real purpose of these types of clubs is fostering social interaction.

Here's how she looks on the half-pipe in my mind's eye.

I wanted to do some sort of winter sport sketch for the olympics but never got around to it. Now I've done it and it doubles as a birthday present.

Original Sketch?
That gets me to thinking about all of the other original artwork I've created for the site. All you are getting when you pay me a buck is the service of me sketching an image and posting it online. You don't get the actual pen on paper, physical entity.

Mike Etoll has recently expressed interest in sitting in as a guest-sketch artist. He doesn't have a digital camera or a scanner so he asked if he could do his sketches using a digital paint program like Photoshop. In that case there is no immediate "thing" one can hold in their hands. There's microscopic marks on a platter deep within the computer's hard disk drive.

Would anyone out there be interested in owning the originals created here at sketch-it? If so, leave me a post in the comment section and I'll see what I can do.

Chris for Steve

Caraciture of ChrisHere's sketch number two for Steve.

I checked out the domain in Steve's email. It appears the company, where I assume Steve works, creates and presents corporate shows. It makes me wonder if the two women Steve requested I create sketches of are presenters or personalities at the same company.

The slideshow on their website indicated some high-buck production value. Things like a roll out of a new product or a celebration of being in business for 100 years.

Enjoy the sketches Steve, Dawn and Chris.

See you in the funny papers. Or maybe at the next Frozen Foods Convention.

A Little Ink

[edit]I did find this story online. Here's the [link]. Nice little mention. Thank you to Kelly Newcomer for sending out the press release. Today the Strib, tomorrow the Times!

Dawn for Steve

Dawn caricature"I have two sketches I'd like done. One each of two women. I'd like them to be fun, smiling, line-drawing caricatures."
from Steve

This sketch is the first of two requested by Steve. I assume he heard about sketch-it from the little story in today's Minneapolis Star Tribune in the LifeStyle section. We'll see if he's pleased with the sketch.

The whole story behind the article is kind of funny. I didn't even know about it until 7pm tonight when my friend Julie called. She started out by kidding me about being famous. Then Julie read me the article.

It was then that I remembered that Kelly Newcomer had sent out a press release for sketch-it and told me after the fact. "...what you need is publicity. So I just sent a very short press release to the rake editors, the star tribune reader's rep, and the city pages..."

Here's the press release:
Scott Moore, Minneapolis artist, creates sketches for one dollar on his blog.

A new use for a blog.

Minneapolis artist Scott Moore has taken the blog idea and merged it with the idea of "wikitainment" (entertainment for multiple people by those people) and he's offering sketches for a dollar. Hey, they are pretty good for a dollar. Scott is an accomplished illustrator and he's known around town for producing a documentary on the redevelopment of the old Sears tower on Lake Street. He's teaming up with other local artists (such as Kelly Newcomer and Mike Etoll) to offer guest artist turns at the sketch-it site. He is also developing a version of this blog/software to be used as an art fundraising tool.
Thanks Kelly and thanks to the Strib. But most of all, thank you to Steve.

Sit Monkey

Sit Monkey
SitMonkey

Yes. Another monkey. Lately I've been cruising flickr and viewing other artist's work. A lot of the images I saw were of little characters doing silly things.

I thought to myself that I don't have a little character. If I were to develop a character why not a monkey? The above image is my first attempt. It also was created using my new bottle of speedball ink I recently purchased.

About sixteen years ago I drew a twice weekly comic strip called Common Era. I used ink and a brush then. I really like the line quality I can get with them. It's not for the shy artist. With practice some great sketches can be created.
