Mermaid and Muse

"Can you make me into a mermaid?"

*Rubs magic lamp*

Yep, I have one wish left, what luck!

Just kidding. ^__^ I hope you like it, and the little muse you asked me to include up there. I wasn't sure if they were fairy wings or angel wings so I took a bit of artistic license...

Thanks,

This was requested with a little clothing modification, so I gave them matching shirts, and a little color. Got to love photoshop.

Here's the kiddo, sans bruise, and a little tone thrown in with photoshop.

Wikitainment: where the audience is the author.

mail art by Mim Scalin
A couple of ramblings about the image above:
  1. We could fulfill requests with collage sketches in addition to the hand drawn variety.
  2. It's great to get real, live mail delivered in the physical world.
  3. Did you ever play "Tag" as a child?
So, tell us in the comments section below if you are interested in receiving collage sketches. I'll go forth and recruit some collage artists and add them to the roster of contributors.

In the 2.0 version of sketch-it we are contemplating additional services. One service being considered is "Go Postal" where you the customer can request a sketch on a post card, add a message and we'll mail it to that special someone. This will obviously cost more than a dollar.

I've got a side project called TAG it's like the child's game but it's been updated a bit. I mailed a disposable CVS video camera to Mica Scalin with a simple set of rules. Mica was instructed to record five minutes of video on the camera and then send it to someone else. The person she "Tagged" was her mother Mim Scalin. Then her mother recorded an additional five minutes.

Mim then shipped the camera to FRIPS in Belgium who also gets five minutes of record time on the camera. Mim sent me a handmade piece of mail art (above) to let me know taht FRIPS, the next person, had been tagged. Who knows where it's going next. That's up to FRIPS. Kind of like a digital message in a bottle.

The fifth person who gets the camera is instructed to return the camera to me in Minneapolis. Then I'll download the video and post it online. I can't wait to see what everyone has contributed.

I've got another one of those CVS cameras and I'd love to send it to you. Let me know if you are interested.

Ahoy!

My name is Morgan and I'm a new contributing artist here at Sketch-It under the screen name of SoulChoice. I'm hyped-up about making sketches for this site and look forward to your requests. In the near future, I'll have a website. To know more about me, see my Blog profile on Sketch-It.

Cheers,
Morgan

It's Sky Bunny!

Here comes the bride

For number 2 of the day.

Remco Bron goes for the threefer with a request for a sketch of his friends wedding day from a picture that he had taken.
I also wanted to mention that the bride looked an awful lot like Gweneth Paltro (I think that's how you spell it) I tried in the short time to get her to look that way but alas I failed. Maybe next time. :D

Couple on a boat...

The concept: A one minute sketch for a dollar.

The reality: About 3 and a half minutes...

Looks like I gotta speed up

Another overdue one...

I was asked to sketch this cute little girl... so, um, I did :) Man, that thumbnail looks choppy... make sure you click on it and view it at %100.

Long overdue "Jelly" sketches...

I was asked to create 3 logos for Jelly... one in a comic style, one pop art and a noir style. I spent a little more time on these than normal because I took soooo long to fill the request (I have an excuse... really). Anyway, the "comic" style ended up having a very pop art feel anyway so I think that's sort of interchangeable, the "pop" style turned out to be, well, a blob of jelly on the word "Jelly" and I interpreted the "noir" style in an art deco/diner sign style. I'm a little heartbroken over that one... I actually rendered it digitally like the other two but when I created the one with the blob of jelly I accidentally saved over the noir one... which was done in black, white and sepia tones. Oh well... for the pay I wasn't about to recreate it LOL... Anyway, I hope Amit likes 'em

Twenty-One Sensational Soccer players

*blows off smoking ballpoint pen*

Phew! Carin Van Kuijk requested me to draw a whopping 21 sketches of "3 adults 18 kids, each on seperated sketches holding the Fifa world cup soccer trophy." She had a link with all the photos to reference from of coaches and players in different poses (smiling, running, etc.) From those references I did my best to make them each holding trophy! The following are the products of this request:

These were done in the order that they were in on the reference page. I hope you enjoy them!

Barcelona Mirage

"My reflection in a Barcelona window."

BarcelonaMirage

With many more artists here on sketch-it, you, the patron are able to request more sketches and receive them in a timely manner. I, the creator of sketch-it, am sketching less and administrating more. That kind of bums me out. I started this whole experiment so that I'd draw more.

One of the good things about being the person who hands out the request assignments to the artists is that when a real juicy request comes in, I get first dibs. When I saw the image that Caitlin wanted a sketch of, I jumped at the chance to sketch it.

It took me back to an ink wash I attempted back in college (shown right). I was inspired by the work of Richard Estes. He's a super-realist painter from Chicago. His most famous painting is of three old-style phone booths gleaming in the sun. He also painted confectioner shops. The play of light and shadow revealed and occluded details behind the store window and the things outside.

It's harder to recreate than one would think.

How about accomplishing it as part of a sketch-it? It took me 9 minutes and 5 seconds. Not bad. I had grander plans. Perhaps I will do a longer version. Such is my prerogative. Come back later and look for it.

Aspire to be a sketch

Here goes a sketch of a mans Love for his auto. Remco Bron liked my horse so much I got the pleasure of drawing his favorite ride. I have to admit I really don't like drawing cars so this one took me a bit more time than usual.

I figured since I had gone so far over the minute mark that I should dress it up a bit more.

Referral of a Referral

April and Michelle
"I was told about this website by my friend Apollo, who got the sketch: Mithra wants a Mouse, and I would like a sketch of me and my friend based on this picture."

These two looked a bit sinister if not a little chilly. So if the eyes are extra beady, it's because of artistic license.

April heard about sketch-it from Apollo, who heard about it from GTMcKnight who heard about it from...I have no idea. Apollo's sketch gets GTM a free sketch and now April's sketch gets Apollo a free sketch. It's all a part of our April Fool Special. Just put a link to sketch-it on your site. Tell them to mention your site when they purchase a sketch and that gets you a free sketch for each referral.

It helps us get the word out. You get lots of great artwork and so do your friends. Everybody wins!

Mithra wants a Mouse

Request: I'd love to have a sketch of my cat Mithra sitting on my laptop, like this photo
Well I actually spent the longest on this sketch than any other for Sketch-It. I did about 7 different versions, trying to get a realistic version as best as possible...but the angled position of the cat and the shadows were messing with my mind. So I finally decided to do this..and I give you Mithra (in my own style of course.)

Hand It To Ya

While most of the other children played Atari or baseball, I stayed in my room and drew things. Mostly I drew my own hands. They were always around. They were also very difficult to draw.

I've always loved a challenge.

The sketch to the left was completed in 1983 and first published in Facets, the school art magazine, in 1984. Andrews and McMeel, the folks responsible for bringing you Ziggy, For Better or Worse, and Calvin and Hobbes, sponsered magazine publishing for all of the area High Schools in the Greater Kansas City Metro Area. It was pretty cool knowing every student in my High School would be getting a copy of the magazine with my artwork in it.

I was hooked from that moment on. I was a member of the magazine's staff every year after that. A few years later when my Drawing Instructor, Frank Stack, told me that it was very important to do whatever it took to get published, I knew exactly what he meant.

Publication creates a deadline. Deadlines lead to a commitment. Commitments translate into finished artwork. Most artists find it hard to complete work. I forget which artist said of their work, "I never finish a piece. I work on it until I abandon it."

The sketch to the right was created some ten years after the one above. I think it's from 1996. Notice the quality I could achieve after four years of college and a few more working crappy, dead-end jobs with lots of free-time to doodle.

The beauty of an art-blog like sketch-it is there's an extra level of commitment. With an ordinary art-blog, I or any contributing artist could go for weeks, even months without posting anything. The ego-payoff of having others see one's work only lasts for a short while.

The fact that people pay us money establishes a contract that must be honored. It's good for us to be pushed beyond our comfortable confines. Demands on an artist can be a positive force.

For years I worked solely on a computer. I hardly touched a piece of paper over the last ten years. Sketch-it has changed all that.

So thank you, all the sketch-it customers and visitors for giving me the motivation I needed to create art once again.

Rose Moscato: x3

Bram Meehan requested three sketches of Rose Moscato, his character from Raised by Squirrels. Rose was described as "mid-late 30s, shoulder-length dark brown hair, pretty in probably a classical Italian way. She's a secret agent sort, has seen and done some pretty bad things, and drinks and smokes way too much -- all of which is visible in her face." A quick jaunt onto his website provided pieces of his comic. Here are my 3 blue-pencil sketches:

This was an interesting exercise! It took me a little longer than 3 minutes, and I hope you like them Bram! Please leave a comment letting us know what you think. Thanks!

[Update::10Apr06] "Rose" by Josh is starting to make the rounds. Bram posted this sketch over on DC Conspiracy.

Maltese Fido

My oldest "raised" daughter, Linda, who lives in New York City, is absolutely nutso about her little Maltese dog, Bonnie. This "illness" is quite common in the Big Apple. At any rate, the dog's "birthday" is Tuesday, 4/11 -- she will be 5 years old. I have searched high and low for a birthday card to the dog with no success. I would love to surprise Linda with an original creation for Bonnie's birthday.

Can you help?

By separate email I will send you a picture of Bonnie -- most people don't even know what a Maltese looks like, and most pictures available on line are of show dogs, which have an entirely different "clip" than Bonnie has.

I like Bonnie's hair style better than your average Maltese. Putting a bow or barrette on a dog is somehow undignified. We love our pets. And they love us. Enough to endure foofy "clips" and sweater vests with matching booties.

Happy 5th Birthday Bonnie.

High School Hijinks

MiegeHS

This one goes all the way back to 1985 people. In my home town of KC, the phone books had these funny drawings of scenes from around the city with little people doing silly things. One year the location was the Truman Sports Complex and another year it was the Country Club Plaza.

I thought I'd be a rebel and give the same treatment to my high school, Bishop Miege. Note the storm cloud. It's over where the principal's office was. The billowing cloud of smoke is coming out of a hole in the school where the chemistry lab used to be.

If anyone out there remembers the artwork on those phone books, please leave me a comment here. I'd love to give props to that artist who inspired me.

German S.

Drumm Beat

DrummBeat

Her name was Rebecca Drumm. I really wanted to ask her out on a date but didn't. She created some incredible, enviable artwork. Like many students going to college in the late 80's and early 90's she worked something like 3 jobs. She was a high energy person. At the age of 20 she had already had an ulcer.

We took a sculpture class together. She finished her piece, a 1/8th scale male nude bronze from the mid-thigh up. I never created a wax from my clay model. The plaster casts were big and heavy and only made it through two moves before I chucked them. I do have a wax of the head. The title of my sculpture was going to be "Hypadellic," after the male model's band name.

I haven't the foggiest idea where she is but I still have this etching she gave me back in 1992. There's no title. It's numbered 5 out of 10. A very limited edition print.

I made it!

Have you seen Humpy? Have you?

Well the great and venerable HavUcnmyCaml? Productions seem to have misplaced a mascot. So due to their request, I have drawn the solution to their artistic enigma (great pun, eh?). The exact details involved a penguin looking for a camel...I love drawing penguins so I took a stab..

A Man Carrying a Turkey

Marilyn Dorato wanted "A man carrying a live turkey upside down — 1920's style if possible. Cartoony is fine."

I don't know if I nailed the "1920's style" (60 seconds leaves little time for research ;) ) but I think I took care of the bulk of her request.

Hope you like it Marilyn!

Canoe Trip

My first sketch for the group :)
i do look forward to doing more, it was enjoyed terribly.

This is for the lovely Cynthia who requested a scene regarding young girls learning how capable they can be.

p.s. i think i will invest in a timer. keeping time in my head and drawing at the same time was an awkward combination.

Beethoven Punks Out

The request was for a baby with Beethovens head, but punked out...this image was to be used in a poster production of A Clockwork Orange. I spent about 2 minutes on this piece, and it definitely was an interesting combination of themes. Maybe I'll go find me a copy of this orange book thingy...

Flip Side

"Hey Awed! Sketch me something Elerish..."

NegativeWikkity

This one goes out to Eleri, the number one fan of PX!. She's also the founding member of W.I.S.H. or Wikkity Is So Hot. That's why I penned an image of Mr. Jones for her request.

Ever expanding my horizons, I decided to create this sketch as a white on black, or a subtractive image. I add areas of light and leave the areas of shadow. If I want a black line, I need to construct the white space on either side so a black line remains.

Beginning with a black sheet of paper and slowly subtracting the light areas really puts my mind through the ringer. I have to conciously study the areas of light that I so often forget about when working on a white sheet of paper. It's a technique that prohibits me from using any illustrative slight of hand or shortcuts.

Minnesota Senate District 61 DFL Convention

waiting at the MN SD 61 convetion I was a delegate for my precinct today at the Minnesota Senate District 61 DFL convention held at South High School. I've been to conventions and caucuses before but this is my first time attending as a delegate.

I anticipated that it would be a good opportunity to people watch and to sketch. I was not disappointed. There's a lot that goes on and much to be accomplished. There is also a lot of waiting.

I was able to complete about 15 sketches. They range anywhere from 30 second jestures to 5 minute studies. Being one of the more progressive DFL Districts there was a rainbow variety of subjects to choose for my sketches.

One of the first sketches I completed was of "Kiddo 2," a Yorkie in a wheelie carrier. His owner, Barb, was waiting in line with me to check in. I promised her I'd copy this sketch and mail it to her since she doesn't have a computer to access the internet.

"Kiddo 2" has attended the Westminster dog show. He goes by many other names like "Flash" and "I Kidd You Not". He only weighs four and a half pounds which is about how much my son weighed as a preemie.

That's one tiny dog.

There was a huge ballot of something like 85 resolutions and only 34 could pass along to the next convention. Next time I'm going to arrive early just to do that. It was four pages front and back!

The real fun started with the "Walking" sub-caucuses. Pick an issue or a candidate and hang out with your leader. The magic number at the start was 16 delegates.

Klobuchar-Education was the one I chose. My wife and I donated to Amy Klobuchar's campaign last year shortly after she declared she was running. She's my choice for the best person to represent Minnesota in the U.S. Senate. If she gets the endorsement, she will be going up against Consumertive, Mark Kennedy.

After a few rounds, our sub-caucus merged with the Klobuchar-Undeclared folks and began working on sending two delegates to the state convention. There was a slight hiccup in the procedings when our sub-caucus was mistakenly overlooked as making the cut.

It was ironed out and I'm happy to report that the Klobuchar-Education-Undeclared sub-caucus is sending Scott Persons and Barb Lickness to the state convention.

St. Patty's Day Friends
