If one hand were to clap the fingers would need to act as hands and come together rapidly producing an explosion of sound. To me, that's what a snap is. It's not the feeble, half fold over hand motion Bart shows Lisa in an early episode of the Simpson's.

Conch: thorn

Anyone read "Lord of the Flies"? To speak a person had to possess the conch shell. Reminds me of when I was working on a group animated project. Instead of budget for a content management software to control who animated what character in which scene, we just used a conch shell.

This thing was quite the enigma to sketch. Wishing I had decided some other medium. Something dry and not wet. Though, the shell does come from water. It's a sketch and I cheated a bit in rendering. Didn't keep enough white out for certain areas. Started light enough that it was easy to go darker if I had to. Still there's a lack of pop from certain areas.

These dudes were all over the place in my animation classes. To hear them tell it, their finished animation was going to be greater than the current Hollywood blockbuster.

In some classrooms, last year's movie hits were played during lab time. It was considered "research" though I have no idea how it helped anyone.

One nice thing about requests in text form only is the amount of freedom it affords. Woox2 wondered if I could represent "History". Of course. I give to you the man who instead of admitting any personal failings prefers to let history be the judge.

I decided to create this one as a continuous line drawing to represent the never ending string of lies and deceitful maneuvers. I for one will be happy when his political line recedes into history once and for all.

I despise these little furry-tailed rats. I will chase after them when they are eating the tulips in my yard. Still, with a bowler hat and a few flourishes to make him appear more dignified, I kinda like this chap.

We're Closing

After 9 months sketch-it is closing for good. Thank you all for your wonderful requests. It was our pleasure to create personalized artwork for you.

All of the sketch-it artists completed around 800 sketches. The site generated over 80,000 visits. At its peak, around 118 other blogs linked here yielding a Technorati ranking of 20,000 something. There was a month or so where we received 30 requests a week! It's a good thing we had 10 artists completing sketches at that time or we'd still be backlogged.

The whole thing was an idea I hatched while talking to a friend of mine. In the begining of Janurary I threw up a simple site and waited to see what happened. It grew into an amazing collaborative experiment.

Since I'm an artist and not a programmer, the site never became automated. Each request was received, assigned and finalized by me. This manual process meant I spent an increasing amount of time managing requests and less time sketching them.

I'm going to keep the site up because there's some great artwork on here. I and the other artists may still post artwork here from time to time. The shopping cart has been removed so we wont be taking any more requests.

Morgan Owens :: Artist Profile #2

Shane Corn, the subject of the first Artist Profile, picked Morgan Owens to create his portrait. I've decided to make Morgan the focus of this Artist Profile. Morgan choice to create his portrait was Bubbashelby, a.k.a. Eric Stettmeier. Morgan provided me with a brief bio as a starting point.

Sketch-It: How do you kill an hour in North Dakota without breaking the law?
Morgan: Who’s going to see you break the law in North Dakota – everyone is inside huddled around a fire. But seriously, many people go ice fishing in the winter or snowmobiling. My brother and I would go for walks in snow drifts. Going to a local bar always worked for me too -- popcorn and the taste of Grain Belt Premium, Yum. During the warmer months one of my favorite escapes was to take a drive along the county roads and watch the land change as farmers did their thing.

Sketch-It: Are you ready to be finished with school?
Morgan: Yes. I am anxious to work along side other artists who are making it in animation. I’m very energized to learn what one can only learn as a professional. At 34 years of age having returned to school after eleven years of making a living doing other things, I’m incredibly practical about school. It is costing me both of my arms and hands to do this so I’m not wasting time getting through it. At the same time while I’m pushing through school, I revel in the nurturing and explorative atmosphere school provides.

Sketch-It: What is your dream job?
Morgan: Traveling Artist – I would totally enjoy traveling to towns throughout the world getting to know each community and making drawings for exhibition in those towns.

Sketch-It: Did anybody ever tell you that wanting to become an artist was just crazy?
Morgan: You know, I can’t remember anyone who said that to me. I’m sure someone did because I can feel the pang in my gut at the thought, but the faces and names of those who did don’t come to mind. My parents, and the rest of the Owens clan, have always provided great support. Laurel Reuter is another person who gave me an opportunity and positive direction as an artist during my formative years on my own.

Sketch-It: Have they had their comeuppance?
Morgan: That’s not something I think about.

Sketch-It: What do you say to a student who tells you, "I can't draw"?
Morgan: I hand them a pencil and say, “Show me.”

Sketch-It: What's with all those lines and shapes? I just don't get abstraction.
Morgan: The abstract drawings I’ve made are expressions of what I sense in my mind and body. At that point in my life, I didn’t have the words or images in my mind to connect with my sensations so I drew without words or recognizable images. I think an artist may create a painting of dancing lovers or a flower bathed in morning light. In doing so that artist connects the sensation in his mind and body with that image giving the viewer a place to begin to understand that sensation. There are also moments in an artist’s life when sensations in the mind and body cannot be matched to a recognizable image. When I made my abstract drawings, I had to put charcoal to paper and react to the marks, lines and tones on the paper. As I said, at that point in my life I didn’t have the words or images to connect with the sensations I had. Now, it has been almost ten years since I created those drawings and I’m just finding the words to match those sensations.

Sketch-It: Is life just crazy with two kids?
Morgan: Many times life can be very hectic keeping two children and two adults thriving at activities that we enjoy as individuals and as a family, but all of it, the hectic and slow times, make the connections between the four of us incredibly rich and powerful.

Sketch-It: Do you get into your children's school projects?
Morgan: Of course. I focus on joining my kids in the exploration of their project and we have a great dad and daughter time.

Sketch-It: Ever hear the theme music from Deliverance play in your head while you were in Tennessee?
Morgan: Many times when skinny-dippin’ down at Sugar Loaf during Attitude Adjustment Hour with the Posse.

Sketch-It: That's quite a studio set up you have in that one picture. Do you have to have a specific mood and setting before you can create?
Morgan: I prefer to create in my studio at home because that is where I have all my tools and supplies. As for a specific mood that I prefer, not in the last year. In late summer 2005, I decided to approach art with a business professional attitude. I chose to put my moods aside and focus on getting the making of art done. When I work with a client, I focus on their words and desires, and when I’m making work for myself I focus on the idea or the image and finish the piece. I want to see it complete so I can move on to the next work. No hemming and hawing about this or that – just make another work. That’s what artists do – they make art. Getting better and finding a voice only comes with making lots of work. Prior to summer 2005, I would let the moment carry me. My mood or the events of the day would dictate what I could do. With that as a foundation, making good work was hit and miss, and I wanted more control of the outcome.

Sketch-It: What is your favorite request you ever received via sketch-it?
Morgan: I received a request for a drawing of a person looking through the circle made by putting the thumb and forefinger together. It was used on the cover of a wedding announcement and wasn’t posted at the request of the client.

Sketch-It: What is your favorite image on sketch-it. (could be yours or anyone else's)
Morgan: Monkey Typewriter

Sketch-It: How many drawings do you create in a day?
Morgan: At least one, and sometimes close to fifty. It depends on what I’m doing. Right now I work on my own drawings for about three to six hours a day, and it’ll take all of those hours to complete one drawing. When I’m sketching out ideas for a board or design, I’ll make many, many drawings from thumbnails, to subject studies, to composition studies, to the final work.

Sketch-It: Ever look back on some of your earlier work and laugh/cry?
Morgan: Always. I review and update my portfolio often and have come to realize that a few of my early paintings were real gems. I’ve also found paintings and drawings that would be better used to wipe the tears from my eyes. But that is how it goes when making art. I’ve made many more poor drawings in my past than successful ones and I’ve learned equally from the poor and the good drawings. I’ve found it incredibly important to always look back at my drawings, the good and bad, and look at drawings of those artists I admire. In analyzing all of them, I learn the most.

Sketch-It: Why aren't there more female animators?
Morgan: Animation used to be a man’s network, but that’s changing.

Sketch-It: Any uncommon advice you have for young budding artists?
Morgan: It is also important to live your life. Get out there and meet people, go to places other than the one you call home, take a job that you don’t like, kiss someone you don’t like, go to museums, go to barbeque rib shacks, go spend all your money, go make mistakes and draw. You’ll have great stories to tell.

Morgan Owens is an artist and educator who specializes in drawing and painting. His subject matter varies from still life, to non-objective abstraction, to off-beat juxtapositions of images creating sometimes humorous and, other times, highly introspective works. His pieces have been exhibited at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Fresno City College, Knox College in Galesburg, the North Dakota Museum of Art, and various galleries.

Morgan Owens received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1995 from the University of North Dakota, and attended the Master of Fine Arts program at Illinois State University, Bloomington. He has been an Artist in Residence at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, at Studios Midwest in Galesburg, Illinois, and the Fresno Art Museum in California. Following a productive and exciting career as a freelance artist, Owens developed a career as an educator and curator.

He lives with his wife and two children in Fresno, CA, and studies animation in the Masters program at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco.

This request was sent in by Greg but the image was titled "guido" so that's what I titled this post. The image is rather tiny. 155 x 119 pixels tiny. That's why I decided to make the sketch tiny. I used an ultra-fine Micron pen. Sometimes I work really big and shrink it all down. Other times I work tiny and then enlarge it. Differences in scale sometimes yield nifty results.

I'm a glutton for punishment. Here I go again with a white on black treatment of a request. I rather like this one. I suppose it helps to have a good photo to start with. One that is already quite dark.

This one had hints of highlight here and there on the eyeball and lid that lent itself easily to white on black.

I hated drawing animals as a boy but these days I quite enjoy it. Who knew?

This is the perfect sized dog to ride around with you in the car.

My first job that the government tracked was as a grocery bagger at Payless Foods. One woman who frequented the store had a special shelf constructed in her car's passenger front seat. It was covered with carpet and had a little matching pillow. The shelf was for her little corkie.

Payless was an upscale store before it was purchased by Hen House, a local discount chain. It was a great place to work as a bagger because we often got tipped for bringing the bags out to the customer's cars.

This is one of four I'm completing for Evelyn. We love multiple sketches per request at sketch-it. The artist gets to complete a series of sketches. Sometimes it's variations on a theme. One person in multiple locations or with different friends in each picture. Other times its different people from the same family.

We also like them because PayPal takes out less money per sketch because the flat transaction fee is spread out between more sketches. It's not going to make any of us rich but every little bit helps. Besides what we do here is about more than the money.

My son, Ezra, out in a field on a sunny day

This is my new favourite customer submitted image. I'm also very happy with the sketch. Mostly happy. Hands are just plain difficult to draw. I love the look of total concentration on Ezra's face as he navigates a field of tall grass, perhaps for the first time in his life.

It is an image of cautious optimism which I think we all could use more of these days.

I'm not one to shill for the man but I saw this and busted a gut. What does it have to do with sketch-it? Nothing. It's just funny.

Since sketch-it consumes all of my free time and I've deleted all of my other blogs, this is where I am posting this image from the flickr, Engrish Set.

Clowns scare me. Mickey-D's scares me. I guess that's why I'm a no-face-paint, lacto, ovo, vegetarian. Still it's good to see that Ronald's got her back.

Well, Jason is taking a little hiatus right now. In fact many artists are on leave as they return to school. We still have a dedicated troop of sketchers to complete your requests. It's just that it may take a little longer for you to get a finished image.

Still the most creative gift for your loved one and a great value.

This is Shane Corn. He is, among many other things, a contributing artist here at sketch-it. We want you, the visitors, to know us, the artists, a little better. That's why we've created a semi-regularly occuring feature called "Artist Profile". Below is a conversation with Shane.

Sketch-It: You spent a year in Chi-town and the last five in L.A. Where are you from?
Shane: Northern California ( San Joaquin County Bay Area )

S-I: Being self taught, when did you receive your first terrible but good critique of your work?
Shane: My first real critique came from a friend of mine,,, he was really hard on me and hurt my feelings it really rocked me and pushed me to become a better designer..

S-I: Why did you leave your job at the Cartoon Network working on "Camp Lazlo"?
Shane: Laid off... They wanted to change designers, I aint mad at em.. it's how the buisness goes..

S-I: Who was your early champion, telling you to forget what everyone else said about being practical in your career choice and follow your talent in drawing?
Shane: My parents have always been really supportive but I guess it was my friends here (in LA) who made me feel like what I was doing was right... Like I belong in animation and design

S-I: Do you often commiserate with fellow artists and blow off steam?
Shane: I am the guy who started the Los Angeles based Sketchbook sessions.....so yeah.. we are a group that tries to get together monthly and draw together and talk over beers and relax... It will be 5 years in october.. we started with 7 people now its a global thing happening world wide.. most recently in Japan... ( there are about 35 members, some old schoolers some new recruits, at every function )

S-I: If you could be any type of medium what would you be? Pencil? Brush? Watercolor?
Shane: I'd be Paint... at least right now.. been painting a lot.. LOL I love that paint is so OPEN for expression.. it can be tight and classic it can be very abstract there is color and B/W there is texture... It's like the ultimate medium for me.. and I love the way it moves..

S-I: Right handed or left handed?
Shane: Both... Im ambidex.

S-I: What does your workspace look like? Ordered chaos? Sickeningly organized?
Shane: Some would say I work in a mess .. Francis Bacon would call my workplace immaculate.. It's a controlled chaos.. I know where most things are.. and I like it that way!

S-I: Who would you like to have draw you? This can be anyone in history dead or alive.
Shane: dead...Norman Rockwell.. that man was like the Jesus of illustration... Alive..Claire Wendling or Peter DeSeve .. They are both fantastic

S-I: If you suddenly lost your sight what would you do?
Shane: Ive thought about this a million times and I always come to the same conclusion.. I'd sculpt.. and be an imagination machine for people.. describing what I could see for them to design around. since I have already been given this fantastic gift of sight....

Fill in the "Describe your sketch" box in the upper left corner of this site. Click the "Buy Now" button. This will take you to the customized sketch-it shopping cart at PayPal.com. Include any additional information in the "message" section and then finalize the transaction. |back|

Anything your heart desires. Well, almost anything. We get a lot of requests for sketches of photos. Mostly photos of people. Sometimes pets. We will also sketch a description of something where no photo exists. These are especially fun for us because they require imagination on your part and ours.

We won't sketch anything pornographic or violent. This is a family site. |back|

Once an order has been received by sketch-it, it is reviewed to ensure the request can be met. An artist is assigned to complete the sketch and a notification email is sent to the customer. |back|

Delivery of your sketch could take two weeks or it could take a couple of hours. Once we have everything we need to begin a sketch, its completion depends on multiple factors:
- current volume of requests received
- total number of available artists
- personal schedule of each artist
- personal schedule of site administrator
Each factor changes daily. We appreciate your patience while we complete your sketch. We are confident you will be satisfied with the uniqueness and value of the art your single dollar has purchased. |back|

When an artist completes a sketch, she or he will upload the image to this site. They might add a comment or two in the post. They will then send a notification email to the customer with a direct link to the post containing that customer's sketch. |back|

You will know the sketch is complete when you receive a notification email from the artist. This email will contain a direct link to the post containing your completed sketch. |back|

Requests for dollar sketches are assigned to the next available artist. If you get the artist you requested, you got lucky. We are confident that you will be pleased with the creativity, quality and value of work from whichever artist sketches your request.

Customers can contact an artist directly and request Custom Work. Final pricing for Custom Work is considerably more than the dollar sketch option but the customer can get the artist of their choice, a more finished illustration, and even the original work of art mailed to them. Ascii Me No Questions

I regularly check the stats on sketch-it to see how people find our service. FreshArrival is a site that posts one cool thing each day. One day they posted a story about sketch-it. I had read it before but never checked back.

By going to the most recent posting and then clicking back a few posts in the archive I found out about Typorganism. That's where I created this neat ascii image using their Ascii-O-matic. I tried to post the ascii text with HTML but Blogger didn't like it and made it look all wonky.

This is my friend David. He's a computer savvy guy so I thought it quite fitting that he get his image up on sketch-it like this.
